What Are Ultrasound Scans?

Ultrasound scans are safe, non‑invasive imaging tests that use sound waves to create real‑time images of your developing baby during pregnancy. These scans help assess fetal growth, confirm gestational age, monitor organ development, and identify any concerns early, ensuring timely care and reassurance for expectant parents.

Ultrasounds are an essential part of routine prenatal care and are performed at different stages of pregnancy based on medical guidance.

Why Are Ultrasound Scans Important?

  • Confirm pregnancy and estimate due date
  • Monitor baby’s growth and development
  • Check fetal position and movements
  • Assess placenta location and amniotic fluid levels
  • Identify structural abnormalities early
  • Support timely medical decision‑making when required

Early Pregnancy Scan (6–10 Weeks)
Early Pregnancy Scan

An early pregnancy scan performed between 6 to 10 weeks helps confirm important details about your pregnancy. It provides a clear picture of the gestational age, presence of fetal heartbeat, embryo size, and the location of the pregnancy to ensure that it is developing inside the uterus and not an ectopic pregnancy, which can lead to complications.

For women with a previous history of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, this scan is especially helpful as it allows early assessment of potential risks and helps guide proper medical care during your motherhood journey.

NT Scan (Nuchal Translucency Scan)
NT Scan

The NT Scan is an important ultrasound performed between 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy (most commonly after 12 weeks). At our centre, skilled fetal medicine specialists perform the scan to provide an accurate assessment of your baby’s development.

This scan evaluates:

  • Fetal heart rate
  • Nuchal translucency (fluid behind the baby’s neck)
  • Early growth and development of the fetus

The NT scan helps in early screening for certain chromosomal abnormalities and genetic conditions, ensuring timely guidance and care for a healthy pregnancy.

First Trimester Screening
First Trimester Screening

First trimester screening is usually performed between 11 to 14 weeks of pregnancy. This screening helps assess whether the fetus may have certain chromosomal abnormalities or birth defects.

The screening typically includes:

  • Fetal ultrasound examination
  • Blood tests of the mother

By combining the ultrasound findings with maternal blood test results, doctors can estimate the risk of conditions such as chromosomal abnormalities at an early stage. Early screening helps parents and doctors plan appropriate care and further testing if required.

Anomaly / TIFFA Scan
Anomaly Scan

The Anomaly Scan, also known as the TIFFA (Targeted Imaging for Fetal Anomalies) Scan, is performed during the 5th month of pregnancy (18–24 weeks). In certain high-risk pregnancies, it may be done earlier, between 16–18 weeks.

This detailed ultrasound evaluates:

  • Baby’s organs and body structures (brain, heart, spine, kidneys, stomach, limbs, face)
  • Placenta and amniotic fluid
  • Fetal growth to ensure normal development

Early detection of abnormalities allows doctors to plan appropriate care and management during pregnancy.
